If you’re a student starting a course later this year, one of your top priorities should be looking for decent student housing.
Although you have an idea of what you are looking for, you need to get realistic about rents and student accommodation, because you may want a built-in bar and hot tub, but your budget is more likely to run to a bottle of wine and a warm shower.
With that in mind – here are six top tips to bear in mind when looking for a term-time home:
Earlybirds get the best deals - It’s never too early to start looking for a student room, and the best often go quickly. Some cities have 50,000 students descending on them searching for a dream home – and that means thousands are going to be disappointed.
Neighbourhood watch – Think carefully about where you want to live. Don’t forget the rent comes with a premium if you live close to campus and other amenities. Try visiting the neighbourhood at different times to check out the comings and goings. A local pub or kebab shop sounds good, but they can be smelly and noisy.
Living with strangers – That great guy or girl may turn out to be a nightmare after a few weeks living together sharing a student house. Choose your companions wisely.
Look before you leap – Never hand over a deposit or sign a contract before viewing a student home. Don’t get flustered and check the little things work, like the taps and flushing the loo, because they are what will annoy you most if they go wrong.
Check the details – Ask the landlord to provide a written list of what’s included in the rent and any costs that are not. Don’t forget you can change the utility or phone suppliers if you want, although you may need permission from the landlord if you are installing satellite dishes or cabling.
Transport of delight – A neighbourhood with good bus and rail connections or an easy walk to the amenities you use is much better than somewhere out in the ‘burbs, even if the rent is a little more. You will end up paying extra in fares further out, even if the rent is a little cheaper.
If you want some advice about finding student housing, try the housing officer at your student union. They should be well-placed to help you out with local tips.
