With up to three months off over summer, it’s likely that you’ll have the time to earn some money and gain professional skills through a summer job. Many jobs can be fairly enjoyable and flexible, leaving you with plenty of time to still enjoy the sun. It It is important to start looking early as many companies will start actively recruiting around February.
1.) Catering

Across the country, catering for events and ceremonies is a booming industry and students are one of their main sources of employees. Catering and hospitality covers a wide scope of job descriptions such as bar work and serving food. Many companies provide full training, pay for taxis back from shifts and increase pay with experience. Catering is highly flexible as companies often text or email during the week asking students’ availability. Equally, catering can sometimes mean that you can gain access to high-end and exclusive venues such as Hampton Court Palace or the Royal Opera House.
2.) Summer schools

There are numerous residentials and centres across the country that offer activity camps for children from all over the world. A lot of the camps take place for around a month and students are given roles such as taking children on day trips around the country and playing sport. Depending on the company in charge of the camp, age ranges for the children differ and because of the diversity of activities available and the age groups that attend, there are a variety of opportunities for university students. For students who have gained a recognised TEFL qualification, have a look for opportunities to work at English language schools as these camps can actually be really enjoyable.
3.) Theme parks and holiday parks

Theme parks become extremely busy during the summer period, and so often recruit many extra temporary and permanent staff during these months. The scale of these venues means that recruitment is ideal for students who can work on a variety of roles such as ride attendance, retail, food and beverage and entertainment provision. Another bonus is there are multiple theme parks across the country such as Alton Towers in Staffordshire, Thorpe Park in Surrey, and Drayton Manor near Birmingham. Equally, holiday parks and campsites always require seasonal employees such as reception staff, cleaners, ground workers and entertainers. There are big holiday park companies such as Pontins and Butlins which are dotted around the country.
4.) Tutoring

Private tutoring for children is expanding across the country and more and more students are seeing the benefits of this well-paid and highly flexible work. There are opportunities for students to teach in all sorts of areas, such as 11+ exams, GCSEs or A-Levels, or simply to improve a child’s confidence and learning strategies. Increasingly, there are opportunities for students to work purely for online tutoring jobs so you can earn money from the comfort of your own home. There are a number of tutoring agencies across the country to help you find clients. In summer, there are likely to be parents looking for booster classes for children to keep up with their educational progress over the holiday period.
5.) Charity fundraising

Although some fundraising jobs are on a voluntary basis, there are a number of charities that offer students a decent wage. Fundraising jobs often take the form of standing on the street with collection boxes asking the general public to donate to charity. Likewise, there are door-to-door collection roles and even telephone fundraising, which may suite less outgoing students. Students have to be knowledgeable and interested in the charity’s aims and mission and be good at talking to the public and thinking on their feet.
